Amanda’s Favorite Albums of 2011 (#1-3)
1. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
I hadn’t listened to this album as a whole since seeing Bon Iver in September, but after re-visiting it yesterday I remembered why I had ranked it #1 in my list. ‘Perth’ has been my favorite since first listen- I still can’t get over those drums. And their tour this year was absolutely phenomenal. I just don’t even know what else to write about this album. It’s pretty much perfect.
2. Typhoon - A New Kind of House (EP)
Speaking of perfect…the only reason this isn’t #1 is the fact that it’s an EP and thus is way shorter than I’d like. It fits perfectly with Hunger and Thirst, it feels more like a continuation of it really. Typhoon has really been the band of the year for me. I heard about them in May and since have seen them 4 times (I cannot stress how amazing their live show is…), bought all their albums, and let them overtake my last.fm full storm. But I think the best part of this 13 piece band is that they’re so down to earth and interactive with their fans. They’re all just normal folks, and they feel like it.
3. Other Lives - Tamer Animals
Easily the most cohesive album of the year. It flows so perfectly together that it took me months just to learn the song names. And not only is a beeeeautiful in studio, it’s mesmerizing live. ‘Dustbowl III’ is one of my favorite tracks of the year. I think if I had to use 3 words to describe this album, they’d be “swelling”, “landscape”, and “dark”.
